What We Do
Chaplain Services
The New Genesis Jail Ministry provides a Christian Chaplain who coordinates all religious activities and provide pastoral care to inmates and staff within the Henderson County Detention Center. These services include:
- Distribute donated religious reading material including Bibles, spiritual topics and devotionals upon request of the inmate and in accordance with jail policy.
- Recruit and train volunteers to lead church services, classes and do spiritual counseling with the inmates.
- Provide one-on-one spiritual counseling for inmates and staff.
- Provide pastoral care to inmates and staff during emergency situations or the death of close family members.
- Responsible for the inmate selection and day-to-day operations of Life-Change and the Life-Recovery programs.
- Schedule chapel services for the various hallways based upon population and volunteer availability.
- Respond to approximately 350-500 inmate requests per month for chaplain services.
- Work closely with jail staff to identify unique inmate needs i.e. mental health, medical care etc.
Please note the following:
1. All materials must be paperback, without staples, chaplain approved and donated, becoming property of the Jail.
2. All religious materials are donated and not purchased with NGJM funds.
3. All volunteer recruits must meet strict requirements as determined by the jail administration for the safety and security of the jail.
Aftercare
The mission of the aftercare portion of New Genesis’ ministry is to provide opportunity for successful reintegration into society through mentoring and discipleship. These men and women need relationships with loving, moral people far more than they need any program. Government programs can’t love them, only people can do that. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “To change someone, you must first love them, and they must know that you love them.”
We are also aware that physical needs can impede an ex-offender’s recovery, resulting in frustration, and sometimes desperate decisions. New Genesis assists qualified applicants with finding housing, transportation, employment, education, and personal needs such as clothing and hygiene.
